On August 5th ago, AMD has announced the release of the first OpenCL SDK for x86 CPUs, and it will enable developers to target x86 processors with the kind of OpenCL code that’s normally written for GPUs. In a way, this is a reverse of the normal “GPGPU” trend, in which programs that run on a CPU are modified to run in whole or in part on a GPU. By supporting multicore CPUs and GPUs with the OpenCL environment, AMD gives developers easy access to both processing resources.
So they can efficiently write cross-platform applications for heterogeneous architectures with a single programming interface,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager of AMD Products Group. AMD is supporting OpenCL with our ATI Stream SDK as an enabler of wider GPGPU adoption among developers and users.
